Dear Tree

As you embrace all that the fall season holds, may this poem written by Gwen for our forthcoming book From Psalms in all Seasons: Timeless Practices for Dwelling with God focus your attention on the sacred ordinary.

Dear Tree

Thank you

for your beautiful

example.

Each autumn

you exemplify

gorgeous release.

Your leaves

change all year

from bright green

then dark

then gradually

a radiant orange.

How do you

loose the leaves

attached to your own self?

Is it more difficult

one year

over another?

I can’t tell

if it hurts to allow

your source of sustenance

to dance

away

on the wind

but you teach

me each year

that change is

stunning

and sad

all at once.

Fall is a

let-go season

of lament.

I am

slowly absorbing

your repetitive lesson.
